Birding Southeast Queensland:

Lamington National Park, O'Reilly's, Girraween and More

Trip Description

Brief Itinerary

Queensland is the most bird-rich part of Australia. Over 600 birds have been recorded in the state, about two-thirds the species of the entire continent. Within 200km of the city of Brisbane and the country’s east coast we will explore the contrasting habitats found here. We will start in Brisbane itself, visiting a selection of prime birding locations including the port, Lytton Manly Mangrove Boardwalk and nearby wetlands looking for shorebirds and other water birds in the coastal habitats.

From here, we travel south to Lamington National Park, to explore upland subtropical rainforest and ‘dry’ rainforest from the famous O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat. We will find an impressive selection of birds here including three species of bowerbird. We will also enjoy the dawn chorus and the song of Albert’s Lyrebird, the world’s loudest songbird. Travelling inland we will cross the Great Dividing Range as we move on to Girraween National Park, looking for a new selection of species in dry Eucalyptus woodland and heathlands among the spectacular granite scenery.

Finally, we will add waterbirds at Coolmunda Dam and various honeyeaters and more at Durikai State Forest as we make our way back to Brisbane.
