Brazil Rio Azul Amazon Basin Itinerary

Trip Description

Brief Itinerary

The Rio Azul Jungle Lodge lies in extreme southern Pará. The lodge is a charming, family owned-and-operated facility, which offers an intimate Amazonian experience. Rio Azul Jungle Lodge lies in an ecotone between the vast Amazonian Rainforest of the Cachimbo region and pockets of stunted Campirana habitats growing on nutrient-poor, white-sand soils. The owners, Carlão and Ivani, have created a paradise where the food is absolutely amazing.
With over 500 species of birds and new species found every year, the region of Alta Floresta and Rio Azul River Basin will be our destination for this 8 day trip extension. The array of different habitats produces a combination of bird species that are better seen here than anywhere else.  These include: Cryptic Forest-Falcon, Bald Parrot, Kawall's Parrot, Santarem Parakeet, Crimson Topaz, Tapajós Hermit, Green-tailed Goldenthroat, Pavonine Quetzal, Paradise Jacamar, Brown-banded Puffbird, Rusty-breasted Nunlet,  Black-girdled Barbet, Red-billed Woodcreeper, Glossy Antshrike, Yellow-browed Antbird, Xingu Scale-backed Antbird, Black-faced Antbird, Bare-eyed Antbird, Pale-bellied Mourner, Pompadour Cotinga, Black Manakin, Snow-capped Manakin, Flame-crowned Manakin, Tooth-billed Wren, and Guianan Gnatcatcher are some of the highlights species.
One main attraction here is the Rio Azul river itself, a tributary of a tributary of the Teles Pires (which itself is a tributary of a tributary of the Amazon). The crystal clear waters and the surrounding forest is the ideal set up to look for many of the mammals of the region, from which include:   Brown-throated Three-toed Sloth, Red-handed Howler Monkey, White-whiskered Spider Monkey, Silvery Marmoset, Brown Capuchin Monkey, White-nosed Bearded Saki Monkey, Tayra, Giant Otter, Brazilian Squirrel, Azara's Agouti, and South American Tapir are reliably seen.
